Matthew 24:45-47
Video Details
Description: In this twenty-seventh message from his series on the last days of the old covenant, Bryan turns to Matthew 24:45-47 and asks the piercing question Jesus Himself posed: Who then is the faithful and prudent slave whom his master put in charge of his household to give them their food at the proper time? Blessed is that slave whom his master finds so doing when he comes. Truly I say to you that he will put him in charge of all his possessions.
Bryan shows that the disciples were to remain ready for the coming judgment Jesus said would fall in their generation. Until King Jesus returned, they were to function as faithful stewards. The faithful and wise among the Jews were first placed over the kingdom and church of the Jews. If they proved faithful, they would be entrusted with the kingdom and church of the whole world, including the Gentiles.
Old Testament patterns confirm the principle. Moses was declared faithful in all God’s household. Joseph, because he was faithful and wise in small things, was set over all Egypt. David was recognized as more faithful than any other servant and rose to rule Israel. Daniel’s integrity left no ground for accusation, and he was placed over the Medo-Persian Empire. Priests were given the oracles of God and charged to teach them, yet repeatedly failed to understand or apply the Word rightly—as Jesus exposed when He asked Nicodemus, “Are you the teacher of Israel and do not understand these things?”
Because of that unfaithfulness the vineyard was taken from them and given to a nation that would produce its fruit—justice and righteousness. That nation is the holy nation, the royal priesthood of 1 Peter 2:9. During the transition from old covenant to new, two sets of leaders existed side by side until the judgment of AD 70 revealed who the true stewards were. The faithful were not only to be loyal but wise, as the shrewd steward of Luke 16 and the profitable servants of the minas in Luke 19 demonstrate. Those who used what the Master gave them were given authority over cities; the lazy and the open rebels were judged.
In the New Testament the same charge continues. Overseers are to shepherd the church of God purchased with His own blood, feeding the sheep the Word and guarding them from error. Stewards of the mysteries of God must be found faithful. Paul, Timothy, and other named men were regarded as faithful and therefore entrusted to teach. The command remains: entrust these things to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.
Bryan then applies the text to the present. All Christian men have been entrusted with the complete revelation of God and are to teach it. Faithfulness begins in the household; a man who cannot lead his own home is unfit to care for the church of God. Those proven faithful in the church are to be appointed as leaders in the public square so that Christ receives the fruit of justice and righteousness. Women are faithful slaves of God when they serve their husbands and teach their children at home. Older women do not lead other women but teach the younger women to do what they themselves have already done.
The sermon closes with a clear summons: men, be faithful and wise to study the Word so you can lead and teach and bring Jesus the fruit of justice and righteousness; women, be faithful and wise to study the Word, learn from your husband, and raise godly offspring.
